Hampi is a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, India. Once the grand capital of the powerful Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century , it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world. The landscape is uniquely shaped by the flowing Tungabhadra River and surrounded by massive, balanced granite boulders and craggy hills.
The site features over 1,600 surviving ruins , ancient markets , and rock-cut shrines that show the high skill of South Indian architecture . Major landmarks include the towering Virupaksha Temple , the iconic Stone Chariot at the Vijaya Vittala Temple , the Lotus Mahal, and the Elephant Stables . After being destroyed in 1565, the ruins remain a major center for history, culture, and tourism today.
